The value of serving
There are a lot of reasons why serving others is good for you. One thing that I have discovered is that I can be pretty selfish and think that I deserve to be served and that the world should revolve around me. This is really called pride and unfortunately it is the complete opposite of how Jesus taught us to live. So dealing with my pride something that I must admit and own up to.
Pride can show itself in many ways. We dominate conversations because what we have to say is much more important than what anyone else has to say. We control the music because we selfishly want to hear the songs we like rather than what someone else wants to listen to. We treat people in a negative way because we think we are better than they are. All of this is pride and it needs to be broken.
We are taught in the Bible to put God first, not ourselves. So pride really is putting ourselves first above God. This is not good! But when we put God first and learn to serve others, things change. God begins to slowly remove pride from our hearts. I’ve learned that when I serve others, not only is it pleasing to God but it also is one more way of reducing my pride. Serving others helps me to love people more and realize how important each person is in God’s eyes.
Serving people isn’t rocket science and you don’t need special training. All you need is the willingness to put others’ needs before your own. Can I encourage you to look for an opportunity to serve someone today? I know you won’t regret it.
